By now you’ve traded in your fleece yoga pants for a flirty summer dress, and your red wine for a gin and tonic. But, what about your makeup?
As you might expect, changing your makeup with the season is about so much more than keeping up with trendy colors. For example, the benefits of a moisturizing foundation that holds up to the dry chill of winter are not as welcome, or needed, in the dead heat of July. In fact, that very foundation might be the cause of some embarrassing melting-makeup moments in the hot, humid weather.
So what’s a girl to do if she wants makeup that sizzles, and not makeup that melts? Let’s dive in and see how you can get that perfect summer look… you know the one. The look that shows off your radiant skin, natural beauty, and holds up to the intense summer heat.
How to Get the N0-Melt Summer Look That Sizzles
#1: Eyes
Ditch: Heavy eye creams, crayon eyeliners, and powder eyeshadows
Switch to: Eye primer, smudge-proof eyeliners, creamy eyeshadows
You may not think of your eyelids as producing a lot of sweat. But, low and behold, what happens at the end of the day? Your eyeshadow is nearly gone and your eyeliner has smudged so badly you look like you’re attending a goth concert in the 90s.
Here’s how to prevent your eye makeup from melting.
It starts with using a quality eye primer, such as this one from Blinc. Not only does it fill in existing lines, but it prevents your shadow from creasing, running, fading, or smudging.
Your eyeliner goes on first to create a clean, crisp line. When it co
mes to eyeliner, you don’t want to skimp, since smudgy eyeliner can make you look tired and well, just not natural. Once again, Blinc has created a smudge-proof, long-lasting eyeliner that can’t be beat.
Next, you’ll need to choose a water-resistant eyeshadow. Ellis Faas has a creamy eyeshadow that’s positively amazing and holds up perfectly to those hot, humid days that are upon us. Peachy Skin, Ginger Freckle, and Taupe are among the favorite summer colors here at Pink Dot.
Lastly, your mascara needs to be smudge-proof. Try this one from Blinc. As you apply it, the mascara forms tiny no-smudge, water-resistant “tubes” around your lashes. Pretty cool, right?
#2: Face
Ditch: heavy moisturizers, heavy concealers that clog pores, full-coverage foundation, and light powder blushes
Switch to: toning primers, nourishing concealers, shimmering foundations, and high-pigment blushes
Just as with your eyes, your entire face needs to be prepped if you don’t want your makeup to melt.
Start with a primer that will tone, nourish, and protect in one easy step. This one from Maewood will definitely do the trick.
Next, let’s talk concealer. No matter what time of year it is, many of us fight dark circles under our eyes. Not only that, but summer is notorious for bringing out blemishes. Instead of hiding under cheap concealers that clog pores, opt for a natural concealer, such as this one, from Ellis Faas that contains vitamins E and C.
Here’s a biggie: Foundation! Yes, this piece of your makeup routine can make or break you. Avoid heavy foundations, and instead search for ones that reflect light and create a shimmery veil. Your summer foundation should lightly moisturize and nourish, while protecting your skin with an SPF of at least 15.
The last ingredients to your summer face makeup routine include a high-pigment blush in a color like Lotus Sun. And to finish off your look and ensure that summer heat doesn’t melt your perfectly-beautified face, apply a setting spray.
#3: Lips
Ditch: crayon lip liners, matte lipstick
Switch to: gel lip liners, liquid lipstick
No look is complete without luscious lips painted in a perfectly clean and beautiful shade of lipstick.
Remember, though, the summer is no time to play around with skipping your lip liner. A gel lip liner is perfect for hot summer days, and it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune, either. Check out this one from the Maewood line in the Ballet shade. Next, you’ll apply the matching liquid lipstick in Kitten Pink.
